Shekhinah (Hebrew: שְׁכִינָה) is the English transliteration of a Hebrew word meaning "dwelling" or "settling" and denotes the presence of God in a place. This concept is found in Judaism and the Torah, as mentioned in Exodus 25:8.
God speaks to us in numbers found in the ancient language of Hebrew. This work is a study of gematria, or the numerical values found in Hebrew and Greek letters. This piece is filled with layers of numbers intermingled with the Hebrew alphabet.
In this rather haunting imagery, Noh Girls is a play on the words: No Girls. In Noh, or traditional Japanese theater, as in Greek theater, men played the role of women. There were no women in Noh theater, and the piece expresses sadness in this aspect, where male actors exclusively play the role of women and girls.
The Book of Numbers comprises hundreds of layers of numbers in mixed media. The layered result speaks to the human tendency to count our lives numerically, such as how many years old we are, how many children we have, and how many times we failed or succeeded. Yet despite our efforts to figure everything out, God can cover our lives and all the complicated experiences with His grace, creating an unexpected harmonic symphony.
