sabino canyon sisters of carondelet
Sisters of Carondelet was a historical project sponsored by City Psalms. In the late 1800s, French sisters from the order of St. Joseph of Carondelet traveled from St. Louis, Missouri, through California, then through the harsh, arid desert of Arizona. They traveled to start schools. However, due to a national outbreak of tuberculosis, patients began arriving in Arizona in unexpected numbers; instead of teachers, the sisters became nurses. Tasks included washing sheets, preparing meals, and comforting the endless stream of patients arriving by railway cars daily.
The Sisters of Carondelet is a performance piece encompassing the spirit of hardship, determination, and dedication. Using over 30 yards of satin fabrics, this work represents the washing of linens and the spiritual washing of souls in the desert oasis.
