marriage of the pines
Working with a Seneca elder, artist Rebecca Thompson researched the historical significance of the White Pine. The reclaimed pine used in this project had a wound from years earlier which was revealed on both faces of the trunk. Similar to the idea that in marriage, two become one, enduring the good and the hard times, reuniting the two halves brought attention to the sacredness of the white pine as both an indigenous heritage tree and a species that sustained settlers in the New York Finger Lake Region.
